You are ranking well on Google for your town and really dominating the competition under local search results. But how do you start to rank on Google for the surrounding towns that are such a short drive away and increase the amount of potential customers? Here’s how.
Longtail Keywords/How Google Works
Use longtail keywords to rank faster. The Google Keyword Planner is a great FREE tool that you can use to find your long tail keywords (you must sign up for a free adwords account to access the planner).
What is a longtail keyword? Typically, they are easier to rank for and are a longer phrase aka less competition. However, with less competition frequently comes less traffic. But would you rather be on page 1 with 100 people clicking through to your site or on page 50 with ZERO clickthroughs? With small budgets for small business, paying for Adwords is probably not an attractive option either plus it stops showing up as soon as you stop paying; organic and local results have longevity online, for even years.
Example of short tail keywords:
• Diamond Ring
• Diamond Jewelry
• Diamond Jeweler
• Diamond Ring near me
Example of long tail keywords:
• Diamond Ring in Scottsdale area
• Diamond Ring in Scottsdale, AZ
• Blue Diamond Rings for engagement
• Diamond jeweler for women over 50
• Jewelry with small diamonds under size 6 ring
• Diamond jewelry gifts for retirement
Tip: Try not to just make up a longtail keyword and expect traffic to your website. If no one is searching for it, then even if you rank #1, you will not get any traffic. In addition, you can Google the phrase you want to rank for and check how much competition like seen in the picture below:
Fix your Title Tags
I always think about this when writing title tags: Would I click on that over the top 9 other results on the first page? Ask your web developer where to fix your title tag. You can install a plugin such as Yoast or All-In-One SEO Pack to change your title tags.
What is a title tag?
It is the title of your website and should be written like a mini commercial for potential customers to click on. When you hover over the tab in your browser, you can see a small description of your title tag pop up. It also can be found when you Google your business as the Blue Title. Well written title tags get great CTRs or Click Through Rates. This means even if you are the 5th result down on the first page of Google, if your title is good enough, you can still get customers clicking on your results.
Examples of Bad Title Tag:
Homepage | Company Name
Company Name | keyword | keyword | keyword
Company Name | service you sell | service you sell | service you sell
Examples of Good Title Tag:
Moz – Moz: SEO software, tools and resources for better marketing
Home Depot – Home improvement made easy with new lower price | Improve & Repair
Winn Dixie – Winn Dixie | Your Neighborhood grocery Store
Amazon- Amazon.com: Online shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more
Forever 21 – Shop Forever 21 for the latest trends and best deals | Forever 21
Mobile vs. Desktop Radius
The same search by the same person will yield different results on a mobile device vs. desktop. Mobile typically has a smaller radius. Your proximity to the center of the city could also be a factor in showing up above your competitors.
Radius factors could include:
• Type of Business
• # of Businesses in area
• Density – population and # of similar businesses
• Mobile vs. Desktop
• Google Rating
• Many more factors
