Your business needs a minimum of 5 Google reviews on your Google My Business page (formally Google+ page) in order for the golden stars to start showing next to your listing on search results. You have all 5 star reviews on your Google+ and even on other review sites. Then why in the (virtual) world do you have a 4.8 star rating on Google?
Bayesian…Is That A New Food Craze?
The answer is easy: Google uses something called a “Bayesian Average”. If you have a small sample size such as only 8 reviews, then Google uses a secret algorithm calculation to predict what your rating would be if there was a larger sample size. Unfair right? Your happy customers gave you great ratings then Google docks you. The only way to get around this is to get more reviews! A minimum of 2-3 per month is a solid guideline. Make sure to train your staff to show customers how to review your business.
Throw A Review Party
Having a review party with happy customers is great for your brand. Have happy customers come to your business after hours and ask for Google My Business reviews (formally Google+). You can even invite other businesses in the area to “trade” reviews with the neighborhood if they used your services or product before or even if you have worked with them in the past.
Tip: Throw review parties at different locations around town. If you have one at your business, then make sure reviewers are NOT ON YOUR WIFI. This could result in the reviews being taken down because it is against the Google Guidelines.
I Want 50 Reviews Everyday!
Be aware that too many reviews at one time could get you flagged. There is no magic number. If you usually have 1-2 new reviews each month and then all of a sudden you have 30 reviews in 1 day, you could get flagged by Google and have some of your reviews taken down.
